Niecy Nash is one of the stars of the new US comedy-drama Claws, in which her character Desna owns a Florida nail salon. During a recent Q&A at the 2017 Essence Fest the actress was asked about the significance of portraying a black-owned nail shop.
“I think it’s important to show a black-owned anything on any show because we are business owners of a lot of businesses,” she responded. “I’m waiting to walk into a salon, a beauty supply, in my neighbourhood and see people who own it who look like me. I think that you invite people into a part of the business when you depict things on television that give them permission.”
