Deciding whether or not to accept a job offer isn’t a decision to be taken lightly. The chances are that if you’ve applied for a job and gone through the interview process you’re hoping to land the role. However, if you’re successful it’s important not to let your excitement cloud your judgement when accepting or declining an offer.
During an interview you should be given the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the job. It’s best to limit these to no more than a few questions so there may be some things you don’t get a chance to ask. - What’s the salary?
It would be helpful if every job ad included the salary but unfortunately this crucial component is often missing. That means you could end up interviewing for a job that looks great on paper without knowing how much you’d be paid. You may also not have the confidence to bring up the salary subject face-to-face at your interview. It’s certainly not advisable to reach the point of considering a job offer without knowing how much you’d be earning, but if you do find yourself in this situation be sure to confirm the salary before you say yes.
- Are there flexible working options?
Flexible working can be a great perk if it’s available to you, and depending on your lifestyle or family circumstances, not having the option to work from home may be a deal breaker. If you absolutely have to work flexibly make sure the option is available to your before you hand in your notice.
- What’s the team structure?
It’s useful to know the size of your team, who you’ll be working with and where your role sits within the team and wider company before you start a new job. This is especially important if you’re planning on stepping into a management role.
- How would you describe the culture?
This is one of those questions that you may not get an honest answer to depending on the state of things at the organisation you’re interviewing with. Of course if they have a positive and encouraging workplace culture they’ll be eager to tell you all about it. On the flip side if there is generally bad feeling among their employees it’s likely that the hiring manager will gloss over the truth about how things really are, therefore you never really know if you’re getting an honest answer to your question. Despite this it’s still one that’s useful to have on your list.
- How did the position come about?
Do you know if the position you’re interviewing for has been newly created or if it’s an existing role that’s recently become vacant? If it’s a new role it means you have an opportunity to make it your own and show the organisation why it’s needed and why you’re the best person to fulfil it.
- What has the turnover been within the role previously?
Some roles are controversial because they haven’t been able to retain someone in the post for a reasonable amount of time. For example, if the last three people to take on the role were all with the organisation for less than six months, it’s a major red flag that could signal issues with management or the wider company which you should seriously consider before deciding to join.
- Is there potential for me to grow within the company?
In other words: Is there any chance of me being promoted if I decide to work here? If you’re ambitious and have plans to advance your career, you need to be confident that you’re not about to join a company that can’t offer you the chance to progress and work your way up the ladder.
