A recent global study focussed on women’s relationship with ambition has revealed that though the majority of women consider themselves ambitious, only 31% are proud to actually call themselves “ambitious”. Instead, in the workplace most women would rather be described as motivated (56%) or confident (48%).

The research was conducted as part of the Ambitious Insights study commissioned by American Express in partnership with The New York Women’s Foundation. A total of 3,026 women took part.

An open letter from the six women of the American Express Executive Committee was recently published explaining the motivation behind the research. It reads: “Our journey began two years ago, when our Executive Committee surveyed the most senior women at our company. Only a third had ever publicly described themselves as ambitious. In addition, while women were well-represented across key senior positions, only one of them reported to the CEO. In that moment, we recognised we needed to talk more openly about how we could fully back our women colleagues in achieving their ambitions.”

What about you? Are you comfortable describing yourself as ambitious?
