My name is Carly and I’m the creator and editor of Lady Like You.
Where do I start? I guess I’ll go back the very beginning. Way before this blog was ever even thought of. Back to when I was 17 and got my first ever job. I was hired as a retail assistant at a shop on a local high street and, like most people who work in customer-facing retail, I despised every minute of it.
Fast forward a few years and several retail assistant jobs later and I finally landed my first ‘real’ job. Something full-time that paid a salary instead of an hourly wage. A job in an office that required the degree qualification I’d studied three years for. I kept telling myself that I’d finally made it.
But the truth is that after graduating from university with a good degree I’d spent a year stacking shelves in a supermarket because I couldn’t find work anywhere else. Therefore I’d settled for a job that I didn’t really want out of desperation. It was the first of many career mistakes I would make.
It was a valuable mistake though, because it reaffirmed something that I’d always known. I wanted to find a job that I loved. I wanted to wake up every day looking forward to what was ahead of me instead of dreading the thought of going to work and thinking of excuses to call in sick. I know, I know, it’s almost cringingly cliché but it is what it is.
So, a couple of years later while I was working at yet another job that made me miserable (seriously, I have the worst luck) I had a lightbulb moment and decided to start a blog for other women like me. Career obsessives who want to learn how others have made successes of themselves.
Women who love hearing from people who actually enjoy what they do. Women who are ambitious and planning their path to career progression. Women who dream big and will stop at nothing to find the job that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
